Crete, NE – Defending national champion Genesis Gilmore (Clarksville, TN/Montgomery Central) led the No. 1 nationally ranked Indian Hills Women's Wrestling squad at the Conner/Oppenheim Doane Open on Saturday. In total, the Warriors secured a pair of podium spots on the day.
Competing for the first time in over two weeks, Gilmore starred at 145lbs for the Warriors, making a run to the championship bout. Gilmore scored an opening round tech fall 10-0 before earning a fall in 37 seconds over Iowa Western Community College's Meadow King to advance to the quarterfinals. Gilmore earned an 8-0 decision before securing a fall in 3:26 in the semifinals. Gilmore eventually fell to unattached Savannah Cosmer in the championship match.
Freshman Wyntergale Oxendine (Lumberton, NC/Lumberton) placed fourth overall for the Warriors at 207lbs after winning five matches in total. Oxendine earned an opening round decision 13-4, before collecting two falls and two tech falls, outscoring her opponent 20-0 along the way. Oxendine advanced to the third-place match before falling to Hannah Jackson of Ottawa University.
The Warriors also saw impressive performances from freshman Ileen Castrejon (Beach Park, IL/Zion-Benton Township) who earned three consecutive falls at 207lbs while fellow freshman Ariah Mervilus (Virginia Beach, VA/Landstown) collected three wins at 117lbs to advance to the consolation semifinals.
Freshman Chasey Karabell (Aurora, CO/Eaglecrest), ranked No. 5 in the nation at 103lbs, earned five wins in the open bracket to advance to the consolation semifinals. Karabell earned an opening round 10-0 tech fall before dropping to the consolation bracket. Karabell bounced back to earn two falls, a tech, and a decision to finish strong for the Warriors.
The Warriors close out the calendar year at the Avila Duals in Kansas City, MO December 13.
