NJCAA WOMEN'S WRESTLING INVITATIONAL - DAY ONE RESULTS
Council Bluffs, IA – The Indian Hills Women's Wrestling squad made a statement on the opening day of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Women's Wrestling National Invitational on Friday. The Warriors advanced 13 individuals to Saturday's semifinal round while claiming the top spot in the team standings after the opening day with 231 team points.
The Warriors head into the final day of action Saturday with a commanding lead, 78.5 team points ahead of second-place Snow College (UT). In total, 16 individuals will head into Saturday's competition with All-American status already claimed.
Sophomore Genesis Gilmore (Clarksville, TN/Montgomery Central) will look to repeat as a national champion after advancing to the semifinal round in convincing fashion. Fellow sophomores Amaria Ridgner (Richton Park, IL/Rich Township), Angelica Vicente Gonzalez (Cidra, Puerto Rico/Eugenio Guerra Cruz), Madison Leverknight (Kansas City, MO/Winnetonka), Ruth Jimenez Batista (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Trina Padilla De Sanz), and Eden Smith (Fort Collins, CO/Poudre) have earned back-to-back All-American honors for the Warriors after earning top accolades at last year's national championship. Batista, Gonzalez, Leverknight, and Ridgner remain alive in the championship brackets.
Freshman Chasey Karabell (Aurora, CO/Eaglecrest) and EmmaLyn Burnett (Kansas City, MO/Platte County) made statements on the opening day with impressive debuts at the national championship. Top-seeded Nevaeh Hayden (Tulsa, OK/Union) and Paola Rodriguez (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Rosalina C. Martinez) make up half of the semifinal round in the 180lb bracket after dominating performances at the Mid-America Center.
Alycia Perez (Glen Ellyn, IL/Glenbard West) at 103lbs, Ariah Mervilus Virginia Beach, VA/Landstown) at 110lbs, and Olivia Stean (Bonner Springs, KS/Bonner Springs) at 160lbs used multiple upsets as the No. 6 seed in their respective brackets on the day to advance to the semifinal round.
Freshman Kennedi Johnson-Washington (Greenwood, SC/Greenwood) punched her ticket to the 235lb semifinal round by going 2-0 on the day as the No. 8 overall seed.
